I wasn't expecting much when I picked up this 4-pack of Kitchen Living Flexible Cutting Boards at Aldi earlier this week, but for only $2.99, I figured I'd give them a shot.

Now, I'm used to good old-fashioned wooden cutting boards, that's all I've ever used. Heck, I thought I was really shaking it up when I bought one of those bamboo cutting boards a couple of years ago! I like the bamboo just fine, but still prefer my old oak board. I nicknamed it "Ol Hickory" - yeah, I know that doesn't make any sense, but I love that board, and figured it needed a name. That's the first thing I thought of and it stuck.
The Kitchen Living Flexible Cutting Boards are packaged four to the pack in lovely shades of yellow, blue, green and red. They each have attractive little drawings in the corner - a chicken, a fish, a carrot, and a cow's head - cute. The idea is to use each board for only one type of food, and thus prevent cross-contamination when prepping your food.
Unfortunately, I can tell these plastic boards and I are just not going to get along. For one thing, they're thin. Very thin. Too thin to be called a board - maybe call them "cutting sheets", but not boards. I used one to chop onions and mince garlic for dinner a couple of nights ago, and it's already suffered a multitude of nicks and slice marks. This thing is not going to last a month.
The little cuts in the plastic make it difficult to clean the darn thing, and I don't even want to think about all the nasty germs that can breed in there over time. The boards also tend to slide around on the counter top - something I don't want to happen while I've got an 8" chef's knife in my hand. And forget about using a cleaver with these - you're gonna mar your counter top for sure.
So - I say leave these at Aldi. A decent cutting board is a requirement for any well-equipped kitchen, and with proper care, can last long enough to pass down to your kids. Practice proper kitchen hygiene, and you'll have no trouble with cross-contamination.
These flexible sheets just don't cut it!!! (hardee-har-har, I crack myself up sometimes)
So, what kind of cutting board do you use? Do you love it?
