Aldi Review: Bremer Family Size Lasagna with Meat Sauce

I'm finding I have less time than ever to cook like I used to, and I'm relying more and more on pre-packaged meal items that I can either fix quickly, or just shove in the oven and walk away from. I'm not necessarily happy with the situation, but that's the reality I've got to deal with right now. Last night was a great example - too many places to be, too much to do, and not enough time to do it.

Sound familiar?

The "throw it in the oven and forget about it", frozen family-size entrée was invented just for occasions like this. I've had this frozen Bremer Lasagna with Meat Sauce hanging around in my freezer for a few weeks, and it was the perfect time to give it a try...

Bremer Family Size Lasagna with Meat Sauce

That's a mighty appealing photo on the front of the box, isn't it?
  • Layers of Fresh Lasagna Noodles filled with a Hearty Meat Sauce and a Blend of Two Cheeses
  • 4 Servings
  •  Made With Real Cheese - NO Preservatives

Okay, those are the promises - let's see how they stack up to the reality...

Bremer Lasagna - before

Uh-oh. I'm not so sure about this...

Bremer Lasagna - after

Cooking it didn't make it look any better, just browner. Don't you just hate it when the meal on your plate bears no resemblance to the picture on the menu or box? I don't expect it to be EXACTLY the same - but C'MON! At least try.

"But, how does it taste?" you ask. Well,
  • The lasagna noodles were okay, if a bit mushy
  • The sauce tasted like the stuff in a can of SpaghettiO's
  • If there was ANY meat in there, it was there on the molecular level only - I couldn't see it with the naked eye
  • There might have been two cheeses, but they had no discernible flavor - there was just a lifeless, pasty goo

I'll take them at their word that it contained no preservatives. At least there were four servings. Small servings to be sure, but you could feed four with this.

And it was inexpensive - I paid less than three dollars for it. I guess you could say I got my money's worth.

But even at that price, I won't buy it again. The difference between the way the product looked in the package photo, and the way it looked in real life left a bad taste in my mouth even before I ate it. And then the actual flavor did absolutely nothing to change my mind. This product needs a serious make-over. Aldi can do better.

So, the Bremer Family Size Lasagna with Meat Sauce gets a "NO" vote from me. What about you? Have you tried this one - did you have a different opinion?

  1. I'd have to agree with your assessment on this one. The Mama Cozzi Lazagna is MUCH better! I've even served it to guests and they loved it too!

  2. Excellent - that's good to know. I'll give it a try, but Mama and I have a shaky relationship. Something about a pizza that didn't go too well I'm afraid...

But I'm willing to give her another try - I want it to work out, I really, really do...

    1. I hear you -there are a few things I still by for my daughter even though I don't think they're all that good. If she likes something, I'll let her have it every once in a while, but it's just not an everyday thing!

  4. Imho the single serving size could be described in the same manner. A little disappointing but for the price and budget it is about what I should expect.

  5. I tried the Bremer lasagna ... I'll stick with Stouffer's on this product.

I've been noticing the oddest thing about Aldi ... they're usually a little bit better than whatever name brand they compete with -or- they're quite a bit worse. So there are name brand items I regularly hunt down and pay for, and there are Aldi things that are well worth saving money on.

And sometimes the good and the bad are in the same product line. Mama Cozzi french bread pizza? Nowhere near as good as Stouffers. Mama Cossi tombstone lookalike ... half the price, and slightly better than a Tombstone pie.

And just tonight I tried the thin crust rustic pizza (about $3.29 for a 12 oz pizza, so one of their more expensive items) but it was one of the best frozen pizzas I have ever had.

Aldi is marvelous for a lot of my staple items ... but some you just have to go name brand!

    1. You really hit the nail on the head! I feel the same way, and that was one of the reasons I started the blog. I was amazed that some of their products were SO good, and others were SO bad - the frozen pizza is a great example! You might have seen a couple of my earlier posts about that - take a look back through the archives if you haven't already!

I wished there was some easy way to pick out the winners from the losers - so I just started trying things out, and reported my findings here!

    2. I suspect that's the only way to do it. Based on a little of the reading here, I tried one of the chunky soups, and it seemed quite as decent as Campbells ... but I also added some extra cheddar to it, which is something I would want to do with Campbells, as well. (Neither one has enough cheese in their broccoli and cheese soups.)

I just keep adding one or two more items at a time for Aldi stuff that I'm very happy with. The Texas Toast garlic bread stuff seems to match up with anybody, at a lesser price, as always. Fun!

    3. Yep - The Texas Toast is great! I haven't bought any other kind in ages!

  6. We tasted something overwhelmingly like burnt oregano but the ingredients list says nothing about oregano. I Definately would not recommend this to even feed to your dog. YUCK !!
