Aldi Review: Chef's Cupboard Gourmet Stuffing Mix and Sweet Harvest Cranberry Sauce

I gave you a quick run-down of what I was going to make for Thanksgiving in yesterday's blog post. Last night, I thought I'd do a trial run of a couple of items, so I made up a box of the Chef's Cupboard Gourmet Stuffing Mix - Whole Wheat Turkey flavor, and opened a can of Sweet Harvest Jellied Cranberry Sauce. The turkey may be the star of the show, but the side dishes aren't any less important...

Sweet Harvest Jellied Cranberry Sauce

The Sweet Harvest Jellied Cranberry Sauce was just fine. It's plenty tart, and the jellied, "slide-out-of-the-can and slice" consistency is right. This is the kind of cranberry sauce I grew up with - I didn't even realize that cranberry sauce could be made with whole cranberries until I encountered it at a friend's house when I was a teenager. I noticed that Aldi does stock a whole-berry variety if that's what you prefer.

Now, the Chef's Cupboard Gourmet Stuffing Mix Whole Wheat Turkey Flavor is not as good as I hoped it would be - but there may be a reason for that.

It cooks up easily enough on the stove top, but it came out tasting rather bland. The instructions on the box say that there should be TWO packets of ingredients to be combined in the saucepan, but there's only ONE packet in the box. Either the box is mis-labeled, or it's missing a packet of ingredients.

Either way, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the product - or Aldi. I know they try to run a tight ship at Aldi, but they really let this one slip through the cracks. Somebody at HQ needs to get on the phone with their supplier and either get the box relabeled, or insure that all the necessary ingredients are included.

I've got to recommend that you avoid the Chef's Cupboard Gourmet Stuffing Mix for now.

I've had the Chef's Cupboard Cornbread Stuffing Mix (in the yellow box) and I like that one just fine, so I think that's what I'll be serving on turkey day.

  1. HI Jeff, you are way more organized than I am as far as what you are eating....good to know about the jellied sauce. I need to get going with my grocery list. I just tried the Aldi 1/2 and 1/2....and liked it a lot! Rosie

  2. Hi Rosie - my shopping list and kitchen are pretty well organized, but the rest of my house, forget about it! LOL I'm gonna have to start getting busy to clear a spot for the Christmas tree!

We seldom use half & half here, so haven't tried it - good to know it passed your test. I won't hesitate to pick it up when I do need it!

  3. Also, I recommend heading over to the Aldi's website and report your experience with stuffing. Best if you have the upc number, etc. IE they have a nice form to fill out and it does get a response I must say. I have been buying their fresh salsa for years and this month I bought one that seemed puffy and smelled wrong when opened. Turns out the manufacturer claims it was probably fermented. So please, go to the Aldi's website and let them know what was wrong, they work to fix it in the future and fix it with you too! They take their guarantee seriously!

  4. Glad your experience with the contact form was positive. I've never had a problem when returning an item to the store - I've only done it a couple of times, but the return was always handled quickly and hassle-free. Good to hear that they're responding to the on-line inquiries also!

  5. Aldi used to carry an herbs de provence gourmet stuffing that was amazing! Sadly, I haven't seen it on the shelves of my local Aldi in quite a while. Normally their stuffings are delicious. It's sad to see that they missed the boat with the whole wheat turkey version. Thanks for the heads up on this one.

  6. Hi Michele - Aldi has the Herbes de Provence flavor stuffing right alongside the whole-wheat turkey flavor at my store this week! I bought a box, but unfortunately, haven't made it yet. Check your store - they might have just gotten it.

Hopefully, the problem with the whole-wheat stuffing was simply a missing packet of herbs and spices. We'll see what they have to say...

  7. I have bought this stuffing mix a few times. The chicken, cornbread ones anyhow. Not too bad but much rather have homemade anytime!! But I must say that I'm far from being a chef but I do know that a 1/2 a cup of margarine or butter is not 1/2 a stick. That is what the box says if you look at the instructions next time for anyone reading this. It says combine 1/2 cup of butter and or margarine which they say is equifilant to 1/2 stick and that's just not the case. A 1/4 of a stick is the same as a cup... Just saying..
