I Just DON'T Get It - Why Pay More for Canned Vegetables?

Why anyone would pay MORE than they have to for canned vegetables is just beyond me.

I received several weekly sales flyers from grocery stores in the mail just today, and I was shocked at some of the so-called "SALE" prices they were advertising - outrageous! Not just one, but TWO of the stores were even making a big deal about their "10 for $10" promotions...

WHAT?

Charging a dollar a can (or more) for your basic canned vegetables is not something they should be boasting about; I would think they would be trying to hide that kind of information.

Happy Harvest, Dakota's Pride, Benita brand canned goods

I pulled a random selection of canned goods from my pantry - that's the picture you see above. I paid between 49 and 55 cents each for most of them. The tomato sauce and paste were even less, and I think I paid 69 cents for the Benita refried beans.

And those are EVERYDAY PRICES - not sale prices.

And the quality of every one of those items is just as good as any other brand - there is NO difference!

I just don't get it...

Why do people INSIST on paying more???

  1. Over a couple days, I've read thru all your posts, and I enjoyed them. You're a good writer, apparently a good cook, etc and so on. We've found that we enjoy Aldi's canned vegetables more than any other canned vegets, and love saving the money.

BUT! I got to thinking one day....and wondered how much corn or carrots is really in the can, and how much is water? but instead of doing the scientific research (opening the can and weighing the stuff) I've just been buying frozen corn, peas and carrots.

    Generally a buck a bag...generally a pound per bag....what do you think??

    1. Hiya Mick - thanks for stopping by! I'm not sure, but I always thought that the net weight listed on the can meant the weight of just the product. I could be wrong, and I haven't done any testing, but it would be interesting to find out.

I've also read somewhere that the frozen vegetables actually retain more of their vitamins than the canned vegs - something about how quickly they're processed I think.

Either way, you can't go wrong getting it at Aldi!
