Aldi Review: Bake House Creations Jumbo Flaky Biscuits

There's nothing like homemade biscuits, fresh from the oven on a chilly morning. I don't have the time to mix them from scratch very often, and even using a baking mix is sometimes too much trouble. When I'm that short of time, I turn to the trusty, yet humble tube of refrigerated biscuit dough - that foil-lined tube of doughy goodness that has been a staple in American kitchens since the 1930's.

In this particular case, it's a roll of Bake House Creations Jumbo Flaky Biscuits refrigerated biscuit dough. By the way, Aldi just lowered the price on these - they're currently $1.29 where I shop, your price may vary.

It would be totally unfair to compare these biscuits to scratch-made biscuits - I mean, what can possibly compare to those golden rounds of tender flakiness that Grandma used to make with such apparent ease? In my book, there's nothing on earth that's going to stand up against Granny's baking - it's simply an unfair fight.

But when compared to other refrigerated biscuits, the Bake House Creations biscuits from Aldi  go the distance and hold up just fine.

There are 8 big, 2 ounce biscuits in the package, and they're ready in about 15 minutes time. You know the drill - peel the wrapper off the tube, smack the tube against the edge of the kitchen counter (the package says to press a spoon against the package seam, but where's the fun in that? I figure some lawyer made them do that to avoid liability issues). Twist the tube open, separate the biscuits, and lay them out on a cookie sheet about an inch apart. Pop 'em in the oven for about 15 minutes, and you end up with this:

Looks pretty much like the package photo, doesn't it? I love it when that happens! As I've mentioned before, it really irks me when the product inside the package looks NOTHING like the picture on the outside of the package - see my review of the Bremer's Frozen Lasagna for a good example. Same thing with the pictures on the menu in restaurants - aaarrgh!

But I digress.

Anyway - like I was saying, the picture on the package pretty accurately represents what you're getting on the inside. The flavor and texture are much as you'd expect too - not as great as homemade, but just as good as the roll of biscuits that the Dough Boy sells - and as usual, at a fraction of the price.

Would I buy these again? Of course I would. I got what I paid for, and there were no surprises.

  1. We've enjoyed those many times with a little sausage gravy for breakfast! Also really love the crescent rolls which are a third of the price of "regular" grocery stores. Keep up the good work!

  2. Did you happen to pick up any of the Tennessee Pride sausage gravy when it was a Special Buy a few weeks back? That stuff's comfort food from my childhood in Alabama. I've still got a package left in the freezer - I probably bought 5 or 6 that week!

And I made those little "pigs in a blanket" with the cocktail franks and crescents for the football games on T'giving - they were Gr-rrreat!

  4. Aldi's has good biscuits. I recently had a tube of them and they competed the major brand. The biscuits browned perfectly and tasted great with some scraps of turkey and some leftover gravy.

Today I bought a fifth of ODonnells Chocolate Mint Irish Cream... It's decent though a bit weak - tastes more like 2% milk than the creamy flavor of the big brand of Irish cream. The flavor is pretty good though. For $8.99 it's a decent buy.
