Aldi Review: Belmont New York Style Cheesecake

If you've checked out the freezer case at Aldi lately, you've probably seen the Belmont New York Style Cheesecake in the two slice package.  I'm not sure if Aldi carries them year-round, but they've been in stock for at least a little while now. It seems like I first noticed them around Labor Day or so. I've seen them in three varieties - here's the plain:

And they're also available in Strawberry, and Chocolate Chip:

I've had all three of these flavors, and I've liked them all. Now, I associate the term "New York Style" cheesecake with a dessert that's heavy, dense, cakey, and crumbly, with a bit of a "skin" on the surface. But this cheesecake isn't like that. It's creamy and very smooth, with the crumbled graham cracker-type crust - more light and airy than dense and crumbly. That's perfectly okay by me - that's how I prefer my cheesecake anyway. Don't know why they call it "New York Style", that's all. Whatever they call it - it's good.

The flavor is tart as it should be, and it's sweet without being too sweet, if you know what I mean. I've had cheesecakes before where I was ready to put down the fork after one or two bites because it was just SO sweet and rich. This isn't one of them - you can eat the whole slice without feeling like your glucose level is going to shoot through the roof. And yes, I'll admit that I've eaten BOTH slices in the package at one sitting (sorry Mom).

Obviously, if you're sensitive to glucose issues, procede with caution - your tastes and blood-sugar levels may vary from mine.

So, this one is a "Buy" in my book. Since I prefer the plain variety, I'm excited to see in the sale circular that the Belmont New York Style Cheesecake is a Special Buy for next week. The 50 oz, 12 slice, whole cheesecake is being offered at $9.99.

That's a lot of cheesecake - and looks like a pretty good value. I'm sure I can work that in to my holiday meal planning somewhere...

  1. We scooped up the Belmont Peppermint Candy Cane Pie last week to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. It was very, very good -- I'd highly recommend it. I'll have to try their cheesecake now!

  3. I've had the cheesecake slices and agree that they are very good. My favorite is the plain one. I love it with blackberry preserves.

The chocolate chip is also wonderful. I love the price, too.

  6. You should ask your local store manager when they are due to be back in stock. I saw both the cheesecake slices and the whole cheesecakes in stock at my local store here in New Jersey just this week! I hope you can get them soon - they really are good and perfect for summertime desserts!

  8. There seems to be less Carmel on the Turtle cheesecake these days and more chocolate lines rather than chocolate morsels. I'm disappointed.
