Aldi Review: Baker's Corner Southern Style Beer Bread

I've been baking a lot lately - both from scratch, and using the bread mixes available for the holidays from Aldi. There's just something about the cooler air and shorter daylight hours that makes this guy want to churn out the baked goods.

I liked both the Banana bread and the Pumpkin bread mixes, so I was rather excited to see the Baker's Corner Southern Style Beer Bread mix. "Just add beer & butter" - okay, I've got no problem with that (throw in some bacon, and you've got my version of the holy trinity of cooking)...

Baker's Corner Southern Style Beer Bread

Just like the other bread mixes, this one is really simple to make; there's nothing to it - just pre-heat the oven, grease a loaf pan (I used Carlini Canola Oil Spray), empty the contents of the box into a mixing bowl, and add a 12 oz can of beer. After you stir it all together, just dump the batter into the loaf pan, and top it with 3 tablespoons of melted butter(!) The instructions call for a baking time of 50 to 55 minutes, but mine was ready to come out of the oven after about 35 or 40 - so keep an eye on it!

It came out looking like this...

Beer Bread straight from the oven.

Naturally, I grabbed my serrated bread knife and cut a slice right away...

Beer Bread - first slice.

The texture is interesting - it has a very crusty top that crumbles a bit when you slice it, and the interior texture is a bit chewy. It's sort of similar to an Irish Soda bread, or a very soft english muffin - if that makes any sense at all.

I thought it tasted pretty good - it's a little salty like soda bread, but also a little sweet - and the flavor of the beer does come through. It's not too strong, and I'm sure the kind of beer you use will affect the flavor. I used a Yeungling, simply because that's the beer I had on hand. You would probably get a  lighter beer flavor with something like a Coors, MGD or Bud Lite. I wonder what it would taste like if I used Guinness? Since I prefer darker beers,  it would be an interesting experiment! The beer does give it a bit of a "sour" flavor note, not unlike sourdough bread. I guess if you like sourdough, you'll probably enjoy this one too.

So, the Baker's Corner Southern Style Beer Bread might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a decent bread mix. Not quite as good as the pumpkin or banana breads, but it's a different style of bread anyway. I think it would go well with a hearty soup or maybe chili - I'd maybe try serving this instead of cornbread.

  5. I did some this week and it turned out really well. I used a Blue Moon in it. I really liked the taste and texture to it. I was also thinking of what it would taste like if you used something like a Lienenkugel Berry Weiss in it. It would be a perfect bread to go along with a hearty soup, or for a bowl of chili. Unfortunately i went back today to get a few more boxes of it and my ALDI here was out of it. They were not sure if they will get any more of it in though. Figures when i find something i like, then they don't carry it but once...

  6. Interesting idea using the berry/fruit infused beer - opens up all kinds of possibilities!

And yep, you've pointed out one of the big frustrations about Aldi - the products do come and go, and like you say, just when you find something you like - "POOF", it's gone. Lately, I've started to keep track of when certain products appear, so I'll have a good idea of when to look for them again. I don't have nearly enough information yet to predict when something is coming back in stock, but as time goes on, I hope to develop enough of a database to share with the readers here.

As far as the Beer Bread goes, I'd imagine we'd at least see it again by next October. It seems like the kind of product that would have a decent shelf-life, so you could stock up and put a few boxes away in the pantry to see you through the winter!

  7. About ten minutes into the baking of the beer bread it overflowed the pan and butter ran down the sides of the pan and dripped on to the floor of the oven whereupon it started to smoke like crazy. The directions say to use an 8 x 4 inch loaf pan. What could I have done wrong? Next time I'll use a larger loaf pan perhaps.

  10. I was in Aldi last night and noticed they had the Baker's Corner Southern Style Beer Bread in stock and even discounted to 99 cents a box!

It took all the self-control I could muster to NOT buy all they had - I love that stuff too!

  11. They have it at my Aldi on discount too. I live in Burleson, TX. I am trying it out tonight.

  12. I have made this Beer Bread with some of the non-alcoholic beers and it is great. We still have some in stock here in Rockford, IL and I am going tomorrow to get about a dozen boxes. I am also going to pick a dozen up for my sister in Green Bay because her store doesn't have any.
The first time I made it we had a large salad - fresh out of my container garden - and hot beer bread and butter. About two nights ago we had it again with another salad and baramundi done with a butter, lemon juice, and caper sauce. It does not get better than that......... :-)

  13. I first tried beer bread while at a Tastefully Simple party- it's a staple item of theirs and used with the many of their dips (garlic, southwest, etc) as a snack or appetizer. I was so excited to see this at Aldi this year! I can't remember how much a box of the beer bread is with Tastefully Simple (maybe $4? Can anyone correct me?) but the price at Aldi was SIGNIFICANTLY lower, so I tried it. It wasn't exactly the same as the TS bread, but it was close enough and I heard no complaints. We aren't beer drinkers, so I use whatever kind of beer I can swipe from family picnics (usually Coors or Miller) and it always turns out well.

I have also heard of people use use a can of soda instead of the beer- I've heard of using orange soda or lemon-lime soda. So that's always an interesting option.

    1. I hadn't thought of using a can of soda - I bet that works GREAT! I wonder how Dr. Pepper would work?

    1. Hi MaryAnn, the Beer Bread is one of those items that comes and goes. I haven't seen it lately, but I'm sure it will be back in stock sooner or later. It seems like I see it every couple of months or so, so just keep checking back! I hope it's back soon - we love it at my house too!

    1. Oh yeah! This stuff disappears just as fast as I can make it, I'm so glad to see that it's back in the stores. Great idea with the garlic bacon dip - wish I had thought of that!

  16. Must buy more! Love bread and love this texture. Super easy! I made it with, of all things, ginger ale. Oh my! Loved it so much I wish I had coffee jelly to go with.
I was actually looking for a good recipe for this stuff. Any floating out there?

    Thanks ALDI Shopper :)

  17. ok....can the beer bread be done in a breadmaker???? thought it would be a little cooler in the kitchen this time of year...

  18. I love this bread! I am going back to Aldi to get some more! We pair it with anything that would usually call for cornbread. Beef Stew, Pinto beans, Fried Chicken and corn on the cob and even breakfast. Just toast and add some butter and honey/jam. MMmmmm!! :-)

  19. I have made about 6 times now. My family love, loves it and I bake it just before my son returns to school to send back with him. Last time I made with a pear beer. This is almost exactly like Tastfully Simple Bountiful Beer Bread but far less expensive. Only issue is finding it in stores. Ingenious bread/cake.

  20. Glad to see so many positive reviews on this bread! I picked some up the other day. Don't go to Aldi too much but if I enjoy this I'll have to return for more.
