Do you have a dog? Have you been wondering about the Shep Dry Dog Food at Aldi? Well I do, and I have.
But here's the problem - our dog is just a little-old-man of a pup. He's a 14 year-old Yorkie (named Alfred) with bad teeth, and he just can't deal with anything other than the smallest-size, softest dog food. The Shep Dry Dog Food looks like it's meant for larger breeds, or at least breeds with better teeth. I think the pieces will be just too big and crunchy for him to chew, and forcing a 20 pound bag of hearty kibble on the old guy just doesn't seem fair. So, I haven't been able to do a review...
NOT Alfred, but his head does tilt a little like that. |
Fortunately for us all, Heather Bea over at Fake-It Frugal HAS tried it, or at least her Scottie, Reagan has. I mean, I doubt that HB tried it herself, but if so - hey, whatever - who am I to judge?
Anyway, she writes a review and gives it her patented "Fake-It Yourself Breakdown", on her blog - here's the link.
If you've got a dog and have been wondering about the Shep Dry Dog Food, you're gonna want to check out her review.
I just might have to break out the food-processor and grind up the kibble so Alfred can give it a try too!
-Jeff the Aldi Shopper
Thanks for that, Jeff! Shep also has canned food which my dog has also enjoyed on occasion - at $0.58 per can, you can't beat it!
ReplyDeleteYep, I've got it on this week's shopping list!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that my dog LOVED it. She is 17 years old and a very picky eater. She ate it ALL! I have tried every brand out there up to 4.00 a can and she didn't like it. I bought 2 cans of Shep Chicken and rice and she ate it! Wow! the first two ingredients are Chicken and chicken liver. That is better than some other main brands! So Sheps is her new dog food and I feel good giving it to her AND I save money.
ReplyDeleteMy dogs love aldis dog food can and I and yhe treats it saving me a ton of money
ReplyDeleteLooks like they cut down the bag to 18 lbs. I have two big dogs, so I usually bought two bags at once, which equaled 40 lbs, but now that they cut it down, it is cheaper to go back to the Purina Dog Chow at Walmart.
ReplyDeleteThere's virtually no protein in Shep Dog Food. You might as well feed them a bowl of corn or rice. By feeding your dogs Shep Dog Food you're taking years off their lives most likely. There was even a recall in 2008 of Shep Dog food for having melamine in their food from China which was killing dogs.
ReplyDeleteI had a Wiemer who I fed only the highest quality dog food. He lived a little longer than average but suffered from huge fatty benign tumors the last 3 or 4 years. The vet said they often attribute that to poor dog food. Hello? I was buying only the most expensive, top rated Diamond, etc.
ReplyDeleteAfter the Wiemer died I adopted a Dogo Argentino. The dog trainder I adopted the dogo from said he only eats Havest Blend, Healthwise and I think Canidae was the 3rd one.
The dog had constant diarrhea and gas so bad you could not sit in the same room with him. It could choke a horse. The trainer said it is because the breed has a "touchy" digestive system.
I thought this is ridiculous, lets just try regular old dog food. The dog didnt even seem to like this food. First I bought Kibbles n Bits, one of the worst rated dog foods on the planet.
He LOVED it and no more diarrhea, no more gas. He also LOVES Shep with no problems.
The dog is a healthy 7 years old. He is a big breed so if I get as long life out of him as the Wiemer I will be doing well. And Im saving money on dog food the dog didnt like. He is happy and we are too.
My mom bought a Shep Rawhide bone for our chewing Chocolate Lab and she won't eat it. Very strange as she loves to chew rawhide bones, but there is something wrong with this particular brand (from China I might add). In researching Shep's I find their food has been recalled in the past. I think my dog is telling me something about this rawhide from China. It's now in the garbage.
ReplyDeleteI've been using Shep canned food to mix with my dog's dry food for several years. However, my last two trips to Aldi's, I didn't see any Shep canned food on their shelves. Does Aldi no longer sell it, or it this just something temporary?
ReplyDeleteHi I'm out of a job and I have two Blue Heelers. So Shep is the answer right now I have tried everything Shep sells at Aldies. They seem to like the Shep ground dinner with chicken and rice can food the best. I put it on top of some of the Shep dry food and they think it is heaven. I have tried the raw hides too they like the lighter version more than the darker version but they eventually chewed them all. The chewy sticks go quick and they love the dental sticks. So they are crazy frisby dogs and they have not lost game and it fills them up. They don't seem hungry at night they eat it right up so I will continue to buy it.

ReplyDeleteBluestreak I understand how expensive dog food can be. I also understand it's often one of those things that you get what you pay for. Feeding your dogs at least a good quality food that may cost more will have a significant impact on their health. Proper nutrition is the 1st and most important step to having and keeping healthy dogs.
ReplyDeleteUnless you are prepared to pay vet bills, I would get them on a better food. Companies often send coupons if you contact them. There's food pantries in some areas for dogs.
You're playing with fire by feeding them a food that is nothing but filler and contains very questionable ingredients sourced from a place we already know will actively kill our pets.

The Shep dry dog food at Aldi, that is grain free has Salmon as it's main ingredient. My bulldog loves it. No more yucky stools (now very firm) and no more scratching. The dry food is the salmon and sweet potato one. Excellent.
ReplyDeleteMy (senior dogs) Pomeranian and my Shelty mix dogs love ALDI's Shep Pure Being Grain Free Salmon and Sweet Potato dry food. The kibble is small and flat, making it easy to eat. No farts, no vomiting, and nice, healthy stools. Package says made in the USA. I'm finding it difficult, however, to find out about the actual COMPANY that makes this dry dog food for ALDI. That is the only thing that gives me pause.

Anyone have any comments on the Shep Dental Sticks?
ReplyDeleteHow many pounds and how much $$ is the new shep pure being, please?
ReplyDeleteThe Shep Natural, Grain-Free (Salmon and Sweet Potato or Chicken and Brown Rice) is $5.99 for 4 lbs. (North Alabama)
ReplyDeleteIn Clawson Mi. It is 5.99 for a 5lb bag of the chicken and 4lb bag of the Salmon sweet potato. So to put that into perspective $48 for 40 lbs chicken or 32lbs of the Salmon. So not really cheap but convient if you are an ALDI shopper. My dog hates the Wellness Complete health that I just purchased so I will try the pure being Salmon next.
