First, the three "Hits":
Baker's Corner Baking Mix |
Friendly Farms Greek Nonfat Yogurt |
Greek style yogurt has become increasingly popular in the US lately, and I was very happy to see Aldi come out with their version. Greek yogurt is a little more tart and thicker than most typical yogurts - and it has a LOT more protein. The Friendly Farms Greek Yogurt is a fine alternative to higher-priced yogurts you'll find in other stores, and the plain variety is particularly useful in recipes!
Grandessa Jalapeño Hot Salsa |
There was a commenter last week (good morning skirnirh!) who asked me if I had ever tried or reviewed the Grandessa fresh salsa. I buy this salsa all the time, it's one of my favorite items - I don't know why I didn't review it for you sooner! There are several varieties available, but the Jalapeño is my favorite. To me it really does taste like the salsa you'd find at a neighborhood Mexican restaurant. It's fresh and full of flavor. It does pack a bit of heat, so if you don't care for the hot stuff, try the Mild or Sweet Onion styles. They're all good, but I prefer the Grandessa Hot Jalapeño variety - you'll find it in the refrigerated case.
*** Plus I just learned how to type that letter N with the little squiggly thing on top - how cool is THAT???
And now, for the one "Miss":
Beaumont House Blend Coffee |
What is it about Aldi's Beaumont coffee? You've seen me review the Beaumont Pumpkin Spice Coffee here, and the Beaumont Donut Store Coffee here. I LOVED the Donut Store coffee, and didn't care for the Pumpkin Spice.
How can the Donut Store coffee be so good, and the Beaumont House Blend Coffee be so bad? I don't get it! When you open a bag of coffee, you expect to be greeted with a rich coffee aroma, but this stuff doesn't smell like coffee at all. I don't know if it's been poorly roasted, or poorly handled, or just plain old, but it doesn't smell right to me. And unfortunately, it tastes just like it smells.
With the rich, full-flavored Donut Store Coffee sitting on the shelf right next to this House Blend Coffee, there's no reason in the world to choose the House Blend.
So, there you go - three keepers and one dud. Have you picked up something at Aldi you loved, or maybe hated? Does your experience match mine, or do you have a different opinion? As always, feel free to let me know in the comments!
-Jeff the Aldi Shopper
This is the third time I have tried to leave a message...every once in a while, I just can't access Google correctly and have to do an anon. post. Anyway.....LOVE your blog! I love most of what I buy at Aldi, and it seems we agree on most thngs! Best things for me are the cereals, frozen jumbo shrimp and the BUTTER is the best! And pumkins here in IL are 2.49 for HUGE ones! Keep up this great blog! Rosie
ReplyDeleteHi Rosie, sorry you've had trouble commenting, but so glad you made it through this time!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment, I love the cereal too- my daughter eats the Crispy Oats, and I like the Honey Crunch 'n Oats even better than the Honey Bunches of Oats I used to buy. I get the frozen shrimp at least every other week! Did you happen to catch the Special Buy they had on Old Bay seasoning a few weeks ago? I couldn't believe the price - I think it was $2.50 for the 6oz can!
No, I didn't see the seasoning! I will have to try that cereal, I love that you are taste testing things, so far, we seem to have very similar likes, so that works for me! :) I also like their cocktail sauce, and I am a Hoffman House addict! And this is pretty darn close! Rosie
ReplyDeleteI'm with ya on the cocktail sauce, Rosie - it's top-quality!
ReplyDeleteAnd stay tuned - there are a lot more reviews coming. I've taken dozens of photos - now, I've got to find the time to get the reviews written up!!!
-Jeff
I tried the strawberry Greek yogurt today. Love it!
ReplyDeleteYep - the strawberry is still my favorite too!
ReplyDeleteI am eating the strawberry greek yogurt right now. I went to Aldi's this weekend for the first time in years. We bought ALL of our groceries there this week. I was amazed at the selection. They even have their own brand of nutella! I haven't tried it yet. But anyway, the greek yogurt is AMAZING! I am hooked. Not only did we save about $150 on our grocery bill, but we found almost everything we needed. (Didn't have the dow cleaners I use, but other than that...)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it just great? I still go to another grocery store for the various things that Aldi doesn't carry, but I find myself even doing that less and less these days!!!
